The Role of High Performing Public Schools in Maintaining Marin Property Values

Throughout California we measure the quality of our public schools through the Academic Performance Index, otherwise known as the API. The API measures the academic proficiency of schools. It is a numeric index (or scale) that ranges from a low of 200 to a high of 1000. A school's API score is an indicator of it's overall performance. The statewide API performance target for all schools is 800.  The current API performance rankings for Marin are impressive and well above the state average scores.

Each year, Marin County schools earn some of the highest API scores state-wide and over 72% of our schools earned a score over 800. This continues to be a significant reason why families choose to purchase a home in Marin when considering and comparing other communities throughout the Bay Area to Marin County.   For a detailed description of schools by district in Marin go to Marin Modern's Schools web page.

According to the National Association of Realtors, “of all the local neighborhood amenities that can influence a buyer’s decision to purchase a home, proximity to good quality schools is one of the most influential.”  Does this mean that only families with school–age children enrolled in neighborhood public schools benefit from them? The answer to this question is a simple “no”.  Our property values remain strong as more people desire to live within a local school district's boundaries.  Importantly, both homebuyers without children and those who plan on enrolling their children in private schools are attracted to communities with strong schools. They know that as long as the community maintains high-quality public schools, their property values will continue to remain strong. This is certainly the case throughout Marin County.

As a relocation specialist and parent whose children have attended several of Marin’s finest public elementary, middle and high schools, I understand the needs of home buyers who are interested in seeking out homes in a particular school district. Feel free to contact me should schools be a priority for you in choosing a particular neighborhood and you wish to learn more.
